The invisible mother was a photographic device of the Victorian era whereby a child was photographed on the mother’s lap while she sat under a shroud. The mother was matted out in the final image that looked like a single photograph of a young child. Over time these mats have fallen away and the full picture is revealed. The mother’s body is sacrificial and secondary to the precious child. Her purpose to not be seen.
