“Gloves, Blame Her, for Cori Winrock” By Ellen Greene 2012
Inspired by my dear friend Cori Winrock, and her poem :
Gloves, Blame Her:
As if everything inside a glass case: the register
your voice not on top but across the room. Gloves
like a white picket fence. Curtain parting. Cross
the room I say. You say. Wife
Do not take care to not leave fingerprints.
We reach for each other as if compelling
the gloves to slip
I’ve been trying a tell to tell
you: I’ve been taking off in slow motion: I’ve been
pin-hole-exposed for days-with
holding the syllable, As if a gloved gun
chloroform or silk over my vowed mouth.

“Miss America” hand painted vintage gloves by Ellen Greene
Most of the gloves here were constructed from the 1900s-1960s. Gloves from this era were still an item that was worn by women to weddings, funerals and formal dances as a symbol of good breeding, chastity and humility. When wearing gloves, objects are not touched, there is a barrier to experience. The tattoo in contrast is a symbol of ultimate freedom and power and an acknowledgment of the flesh and all its desires. A symbol of singularity and rebellion. Together these two elements combine to express uniquely feminine modern narratives.

Today is the first warm day of the year where most of my tattoos are visible. Today I morph into the “tattooed” lady. Gazes change, children point, I become a show- I wish I could charge admission….
”There is a charge/ For the eyeing of my scars, there is a charge/ For the hearing of my heart—/ It really goes./ And there is a charge, a very large charge/ For a word or a touch/ Or a bit of blood/ Or a piece of my hair or my clothes.” -Sylvia Plath

These carnival horse are so weathered and beautiful. They still look like they are running wild even as they fall apart. Poetic.
